Category: Start / Information on Knots and Braiding
You actually need very few knots to do rope bondage. However, like me, you may find that working with rope gets you interested in other knots. Or maybe you would like to incorporate more braiding into your rope bondage. Braided ropes can be very beautiful. If you find yourself getting interested in knots and braiding, here are some books and links you might find interesting.

A good book on whipmaking, by the president of the Australian Plaiters and Whipmakers Association. (You can see their website at http://www2.tpg.com.au/users/ramskull/.) This book gives instructions on how to make your own whips, but it would take a lot more patience than I have to pull it off. There is a lot of good braiding information in the book, though, including how to braid your initials into the handle.
A program to draw Celtic knots in 2D or 3D. You can select various characteristics of the knot, then it will generate it for you. If you like it, you can export it in various 3D graphics formats, like VRML or STL.
A program to draw knots in 3D. You select the knot, and it shows you an animation of it being drawn. Afterwards, you can export it in various 3D formats, if you like.
This book has the standard knots, but it also talks a lot about how they are used aboard sailboats. It has a good description of marling, which is useful for tying people to things like X-crosses.
This Bruce Grant is not related to me. This one lived in the early part of the 1900's. He saw that leather braiding was becoming a lost art, and strived to catalog and preserve the braiding arts of the cowboy. There are a ton of interesting braids in here. The drawings, while clear, are not the easiest things in the world to follow.
This is a smaller book than The Marlinespike Sailor, with a lot of the same stuff. Buy it if you're a Hervey Garrett Smith groupie, like I am, but otherwise you are probably better off just getting The Marlinspike Sailor.
This book has all sorts of interesting knots, including a whole bunch of fishing knots. Fishing knots are like a whole different world compared to regular knots.
